Derbyshire

This is a shot of Derbyshire, a county I'm pretty much in love with. This was taken last month when the light was pretty much perfect, one of those cold, crisp and sunny winter days...

I took a fair few photos that day, and a lot of them came out well, so a few more will probably emerge over time.

Urbanite...

Well, it looks good. This was taken from a car window as my friends and I set out on a little road trip to a local landmark. The original is in colour, but I felt that greyscale suited this image much more than the colours did. So I photoshopped the colours out of it...

Can't really think of much else to write today, I hope you like the photo.

Monument Valley

So, I stumbled upon this site here and it reminded me of my trip to the USA to visit the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley (pictured here). At the time I was semi-obsessed with native American culture, so the trip truly fascinated for my young self.

As I'm writing this the guy who occupies town centres dressed in 'native American' clothing (not sure if it's real or not) is serenading me via the CD I bought in ASDA the other week... it's very relaxing and evocative, and, in fairness to him, seems to be well made. No doubt the perfect accompaniment to this blog and trip down memory lane...

I would highly recommend visiting this part of the world as the scenery is stunning! I intend to upload a few more photos from that trip in the future as a lot of them are snapshots of lovely places.

This particular shot, which encompasses the most famous skyline outside of New York, really conveys the space of the American mid-west... A lot of movies have been shot in this location and you can see why: it is typical cowboy scenery.

Best Day of my Life...so far

Photo of the summer! This was taken on 'results day' this year, shortly after we'd all received our A Level results. The sun came out and my friends and I disappeared off to the pub (as you do) and had lunch. If it sounds very un-studenty then don't you worry - we went out that night and had a brilliant time! In fact, I'll upload a photo from the night as well...

As you can see, the night was one of much joy and plenty of booze...! Somehow I was still able to hold the camera upright which is perhaps a greater achievement than completing A Levels.

The reason I've chosen these photos today is partly because it's grey and wintery outside, so it's nice to remember that beautiful day, and partly because it's a strong reminder that being a youth in Britain is not all about stabbing people and having no aspirations. My friends and I earnt that day!

But mostly I just like the photos...!

View from near Calvi

This is the view from a villa near Calvi, Corsica. Can't remember exactly when the photo was taken, could have possibly been the summer of 2006. We had a lovely couple of weeks there, the weather, if I recall, was pretty much perfect for the entire fortnight.

This photo came about late in the day. The sun disappeared behind those clouds, creating this lovely view. I grabbed the family camera (sadly not the greatest quality) and took a couple of snaps... this is the best of the bunch!

I have other shots of this same view taken on different days and at different times, including sunset, my favourite time to take photos.

Barcelona, numero uno

The first of several photos I'm planning on publishing that were taken during a school trip to Barcelona. This is the Arc de Triomf in the centre of the city. The Arc was "the gateway to the famous 1888 Expo World Fair and there are statues of women on the sides of the arch, symbolising fame. There are other detailed stone carvings and also a coats of arms, which represents all of the Spanish provinces, with Barcelona in the centre."**

Perhaps not as famous as its Parisian cousin, this monument is still a wonder to behold. I like this picture for a number of reasons. One, it was taken whilst crossing the road, and so it was a relief to see it turn out so well. Two, the monument itself is rather nice to look at. And three, the mixture of early morning (well, 10am) traffic and slight haze reminds you that, despite the trees, wide roads and lovely arch, Barcelona is still a modern city with all the issues that that entails.

All in all, this is a favourite of mine, and is but one of many photos that I took during my time in Spain.

First post

Firstly, a classic. I took this photo years ago when I visited the Grand Canyon with my family. I think it was during the Easter holidays in 2003, so I would have been 13 when I took this photo.

This was taken on the first digital camera that we owned as a family, and so the quality is not brilliant, but it's too important to me to miss it off this blog.

Due to the altitude snow is not uncommon in the Grand Canyon, but this does not lessen the effect. It was truly an incredible sight and so I had to take photos of it. This just happens to be my favourite. Leave me some feedback, let me know what you think, if you agree with me on this photo or not.
